Joan passed away peacefully August 24, 2016. She is preceded in death by her husbands Lyle Hawkins and John Blom, along with step-son Todd Blom. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Debra (Michael) Roebuck and Rebecca (Russell) Fraenkel; step-children Tim Blom and Terri Arucha; grandchildren Emma Roebuck, Stephanie Roebuck (Fiance, Brody Steineck), Vanessa (Jonathan) Fasoli, and Evan Fraenkel; siblings Thomas (Pamela) Hjermstad and Lori (Randy) Humphrey; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Joan was born on October 20, 1934 to Otto C.T. “Tom” and Marguerite Elaine (Rehard) Hjermstad in Chicago, IL. She grew up in Park Rapids, MN. After marrying Lyle, they moved to Hibbing, MN where they began their family life and raised their young daughters. Following Lyle’s unexpected death, Joan became the manager and eventual owner of the Bridgeman’s Restaurant in Grand Rapids, MN. During this time, she and John raised their blended family, eventually retiring. In 2009, Joan relocated to White Bear Lake, MN to be closer to her daughters and their families. Her dedication to family and community, sincere generosity, love for animals and knack for baking delicious treats will be missed, but never forgotten. A memorial gathering will be held Sunday, September 18, 1-4 pm at The Boulders Senior Living Community, 3533 Willow Ave, White Bear Lake, MN 55110, with an opportunity to share reflections at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to her favorite charities.
