Obituary for Richard Edward Callaway

Richard (Rick) Callaway PhD, 61, of Brooklyn Park MN entered into eternal rest on
Wednesday, January 10, 2018 after a short battle with cancer.
Rick was born October 26, 1956 to Martin & Mary (Young) Callaway at Larson Air Force Base,
Moses Lake Washington They moved to Wisconsin in 1958. He graduated from La Crosse
Central High School in 1974 with highest honors. He attended UW-La Crosse and in his junior
year he studied in Spain, where he made the College of Letters and Science Dean’s list. He
graduated from UW-La Crosse with highest honors and his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1978. He
continued his education at the University of Indiana Kelley School of Business where he received his MBA and PhD in Finance.
He began his teaching career at LSU in Baton Rouge, LA in 1986 and married his first wife Terry Sullivan who preceded him in death in 1998. Rick also taught at the University of Tennessee until moving back to La Crosse where he continued his teaching career at UW-La Crosse until 1998. Rick met the love of his life Emma Harvey in 2001 and the two were later married in 2003 when they moved to Brooklyn Park, MN. Rick resumed his teaching career in 2003 and later joined the staff at St Mary’s University of Minnesota Twin Cities eventually becoming the Doctor of Business Administration Program Director in which he had an important role in developing that program.
Rick was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was a Sr. De
Molay and a perpetual member and Past Master of La Crosse Masonic Lodge 190 Free and
Accepted Masons. Above all Rick enjoyed time with his family and friends, playing “snooker”,
cards, Yahtzee, cheering for the Green Bay Packers and his motorcycling experiences with great friend Keith Carlson.
He is survived by his wife Emma (Harvey), Step-daughter Colleen Harvey, Step-grandson Alex
Harvey. His Parents Martin and Mary (Young) Callaway of La Crosse, WI, Sister Vicky (Steve)
Brokow of La Crosse, WI, Sister Mary Anne (David) VanVoorhis of La Crosse, WI, Brother David
(Karen) of Altoona, WI, Sister Dawn (Bob) Mainz of Maple Grove, MN. He is further survived by
Emmie's sisters, brother, brothers in law, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a great niece. He
was preceded in death by his Grandparents Joseph and Aleda Young, Willard and Gertrude
Callaway, and first wife Terry Sullivan.
Emmie would like to extend a special thank you to Kevin and Julie Warner, other family and
friends, co-workers and staff at St Mary’s for their love and support.
