Shirley Jean Verner nee Andrle

Shirley Jean Verner nee Andrle passed away peacefully at her home on August 17, 2017. She was born to Bohush (Ed) and Zdenka (Millie) Andrle on January 17, 1933, in Minneapolis, MN. She married the love of her life, Frank Miroslav (Mir) Verner, on February 25, 1957. To this union were born two children, Jean Marie Verner Draheim and Richard Jay Verner.

Shirley was a graduate of Minneapolis North High School and the University of Minnesota. Shirley taught in the Robbinsdale and St. Paul Public School Systems for many years. She was an active member of Sokol Minneapolis and Czech and Slovak Sokol Minnesota for over 65 years and served in numerous leadership positions within that organization. In her spare time she enjoyed many hobbies over the years including: pottery making, painting, sewing and creative writing. She enjoyed fall trips to the North Shore. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband and took many trips to Europe, Scandinavia, and all around the United States and Canada. One of her greatest joys was sitting in her kitchen or on her deck and watching the wildlife around her home in Marine on St. Croix that she and her husband had planned and built together.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Mir. Shirley is survived by her children Jean Marie Draheim (Charles) and Richard Jay Verner (Mary Kate Boylan). Additional survivors include: grandchildren Frances, Patrick, Thomas, and Nora Verner; her two brothers, Ronald (Ann) and Donald (Patricia); nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews; many good fellow teachers and friends.

Visitation will be at Honsa Family Funeral Home, 2460 East County Road E, White Bear Lake, MN 55110, on Friday, September 15 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held at the C.S.P.S Hall, 383 Michigan St., Saint Paul, MN 55102, on Sunday, September 17. Visitation from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM with the Celebration of Life at 12:00 PM. Luncheon to follow.

Memorials preferred to the Sokol Minnesota children’s dance program, Sokol Minnesota theater restoration project, or donor’s choice.
