Arnold E. Hoppenstedt
Age 97
Of White Bear Lake, MN
Arnold was born in St. Paul, MN in 1924, second oldest of twelve siblings, son of Arnold W. and Bernice Hoppenstedt. Preceded in death by wife Anna and son Arnold J. Survived by son Bruce, four brothers and three sisters, many nieces and nephews.
Arnold grew up in North St. Paul, attended North High School, and worked as a youth to help support the family.
He joined the US Army in 1943, was sent to the European Theater, and was eventually stationed in Friedrichsfeld, Germany as part of the American occupying force. It was there that he met his future wife, Anna, a German citizen where both attended the local Catholic church. Arnold was discharged in 1946 and stayed in Germany where he and Anna were married in 1948. They traveled by boat to the US, settling in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, where they raised two boys.
Arnold was a cabinetmaker by trade, worked many jobs, and spent 20 years at the University of Minnesota Physical Plant as a foreman. Arnold could fix anything, and was a talented carpenter, roofer, and auto repairman. He was often asked by others to help with projects which he always did happily.
He was a hunter, camper, fisherman in the early years, then an avid golfer with Anna later in life. After retirement, Arnold and Anna traveled many times to Germany, and wintered in Texas for many years. After Anna’s death in 2017, Arnold continued to live in their house until his death.
Arnold was a proud and talented man, well-liked by coworkers, friends, neighbors and family.
He will be missed by many.
A Visitation will be from 9:30 – 10:30 AM on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at HONSA FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2460 East County Road E., White Bear Lake, MN. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at ST. MARY OF THE LAKE, 4741 Bald Eagle Avenue, White Bear Lake, MN. Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
