Mel grew up in St. Paul and was confirmed and married at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (St. Paul’s UCC). In the early 1960’s Mel and Nancy moved to White Bear Lake where they raised their family.
Mel was a member of the Army National Guard for 35+ years and worked for The St. Paul Companies for 38 years. During retirement he enjoyed life at their lake home in NW Wisconsin. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. He was a “jack of all trades, master of none” which was a perfect fit for Habitat for Humanity. He volunteered at Store To Door spending hours cutting out coupons. He volunteered for years, in many capacities, at St Paul’s UCC. Cars, ice fishing and attending the St. Paul Winter Carnival were some of his favorite pastimes. He played volleyball and bowled for many years with The St. Paul Companies.
Mel was a personable, well-liked man, who talked easily with others and made them feel welcome. He would encourage and praise people while at the same time challenge them to be their best. Family holiday gatherings often lasted well into the early morning hours, as he never wanted the party to end.
