Obituary for Roger Lee Groetsch

Roger Lee Groetsch was born in St. Paul Minnesota to John (Jack) and Lilah Groetsch on 1/31/1934. He ultimately grew up in Renville Minnesota on the farm of his grandparents, George and Edith Pettis. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sara (Briggs) Groetsch and his daughter, Susan (Groetsch) Sievers (Jeff). He is survived by his son, James (Anne Marie) Groetsch and their three sons, Maxwell, Harrison and Cooper Groetsch; his son, John Groetsch and family; his daughter, Nancy Groetsch; and Susan’s children, Derek and Marissa Sievers.

Roger graduated from Renville high school where he played varsity football, basketball and baseball.
He graduated from Mankato State University with a bachelor’s degree in education, later earning his master’s degree from Bemidji State University. Roger met his wife, Sara, at Mankato State, they married and raised a family of four children. Roger taught industrial arts for over 30 years to middle and high school students as well as coaching youth baseball, softball and basketball.
One of his great loves was the horses he owned - both in his youth and upon retirement from teaching. His one regret growing up was that he sold his beloved horse “June” for his first car! But later in life, he sold his car and kept his horses, Cinder, Sweet Pea, Bella and Buddy. Roger also loved camping, fishing, canoeing (in fact built his own canoe) and RVing with Sara and friends. Favorite places for fishing and camping trips included the Boundary waters and the St. Croix River.

The family sincerely thanks Roger’s good friend, Mr. Loren Sederstrom, for the special care, love, friendship, and protection that he gave Roger, through his guardian and conservatorship duties, in the last years of Roger’s life.
