Obituary for Roger Allen Handevidt

Roger A. Handevidt, originally of Stillwater, MN passed on August 25, 2022 to life in the Universal Greatness. He was a resident of Fort Lauderdale, FL. At 81, Roger lived a determined life despite his numerous medical challenges.

As a young man, he traveled across the country trouble shooting product issues for Anderson Windows. He then became a real estate agent in Minneapolis and acquired over a dozen residential rental properties in the Twin Cities, which he owned for over 40 years. In the late 1970s he vacationed in Fort Lauderdale and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to purchase a Guest House just 2 blocks from the beach. While retaining ownership of the Minnesota rental properties, he owned and operated his guest house, the Orton Terrace. It became his beloved home for the next 38 years. During those years, he formed long-standing relationships with many of his guests; relationships that are still viable today. Roger served on a number of local tourism organizations promoting the pleasures of vacationing on Ft. Lauderdale’s beautiful beaches. For the past three years, Roger was a resident of the Meridian at Waterways of Ft Lauderdale, an assisted living facility. He was known by his fellow-residents as “Mr. Congeniality,” always bringing cheer and enthusiasm to all the activities he daily attended and singing weekly with the resident’s chorus, “Alive and Singing.” Roger was a member of the United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale where he served as greeter and usher for many years sharing his warm greeting with all who came to worship.

Roger was preceded in death by his father, Weldon Handevidt and mother, Jean Louise (Leavitt), a sister, Linda (Lorenz), his brother Russell, and Russell’s twin sister, Phyllis Handevidt; Aunt and Uncle Kay and Gordy Handevidt.

Roger leaves behind his sister-in-law, Nancy Handevidt of Neenah, WI, two sisters; Andrea Handevidt of St. Paul and Victoria Handevidt of the UK, and many cousins and an extended family.

Family and friends are invited to gather at 2:30 PM on September 23, 2022 to bless and inter him near his parents and grandparents at Fairview Cemetery, 6373 Osgood Avenue N., Stillwater, MN; reception to follow.

A Memorial Gathering for Fort Lauderdale friends is being planned, details yet to be finalized. Remembrance Gifts in memory of Roger can be made to the Rev. Patrick Rogers Arts Fund, of the United Church of Christ Fort Lauderdale. For remembrance gifts directions, contact the church office at: 954-563-4271.
