Dorothy

Age 89, of Hugo

Died on February 20th, 2023

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Dan, and eldest son (also) Dan. She is survived by her sons Dave (Jody), Doug (Linda) and Don (Karen), eight grandchildren Danielle (Matt) Johnson, Stacy (Brian Aarthun) Powers, Ken (Nicole) Powers, Tommy (Nancy) Powers, Jessica (Alex Neri) Powers, Amanda (Matt Spitzberg) Powers, Matt (Jennifer) Powers and Elizabeth Powers; twelve great-grandchildren: Makayla, Joseph, Bryce, Kiera, Drake, Payton, Brenna, Landon, Mia, Lydia, Violet and Brixton; extended family and many friends.

Dorothy was born on August 8, 1933 to Bert and Annabel Bailey, in Kerrick, MN, and was raised with her two older brothers, Lee and Duane, in St. Paul. Dorothy went to Gorman Grade School in St. Paul, and graduated from Washington High School. She was a good student and was rumored to have done some homework for her high school sweetheart, Dan Powers.

Dorothy and Dan married ten days after Dorothy's 18th birthday at Scott Air Force base in Illinois, and settled into married life on Nokomis Avenue in St. Paul after Dan completed his military service. The family moved to White Bear Lake, where the boys were raised, and then Dan and Dorothy moved to Centuria, WI, where they owned the local Coast to Coast hardware store for many years. Dorothy was always so generous- "discounting" items for family or trying to send things home for free. Dan and Dorothy had a special love for each other. They were able to spend all day together in the store, and still wanted to spend all of their free time together. They eventually moved to Hugo so they could be closer to their family. Dan died in 2005, and Dorothy missed him deeply.

Dorothy made life-long friends wherever she went. She was a great listener and had an easy going manner and a great sense of humor. She kept in touch with friends from long ago, and cultivated new friendships throughout her life.

Dorothy loved her family so much. She loved to bake and cook for her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was proud that she played a part in creating such a large family. All of the major holidays were hosted by Dorothy at her home.

Dorothy was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease shortly after Dan's death in 2005, but was able to live with very few limitations until just the past few years. Even when her age and Parkinson's eventually required Dorothy to need more skilled care, she always looked at visitors and caregivers with that lovely smile and bright blue eyes, and she never complained.
